1.1 Poker – Money to be made
Over the last few years Poker has grown to become the world’s favourite game. Player numbers are growing at a phenomenal rate. The two main reasons for this are:
- Internet Poker – the growth of internet poker now means that you can log on and find a game of poker at any time of the day or night, its less intimidating than playing live in a real casino and you can play in your pyjamas or while eating or however you want!
- TV Coverage – nowadays you can turn on your T.V and find coverage of a poker tournament frequently. There are even Poker specialised channels now. This is helping new players to understand the rules and strategies of poker and encourages them to have a go themselves.
There is no doubt that there is a lot of money to be made playing Poker, Internet tournaments are starting every hour that offer prize money of thousands of dollars, there are also some very large online tournaments that offer $million+ prize money.
The biggest live tournament in the world is the World Series of Poker, and at the 2005 WSOP the first prize winner walked away with $7.5 million and in 2006 over $12 million!
It’s hard to know just how much money people are winning playing online. Unlike live tournaments you can remain relatively unknown and still win a fortune online. One player the world does know about though is Erik ‘The Salmon’ Sagstrom from Sweden who has won over $5m playing online poker.
1.2 Aim of this course
Many people believe that poker is a game of luck, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Poker is a game of skill, that’s the first thing you have to accept and understand.
