145 players participated in Event 7, $5, 000 Pot Limit Omaha (with rebuys) but as always only nine of these would make it to the bright lights of the final table. The final table line-up promised to be one of the toughest tables we have seen so far at this year’s WSOP.
Seat 1: Every ones favourite Costa Rican Humberto ‘The Shark’ Brenes - 275,000 chips
Seat 2: Triple WSOP bracelet winner John Juanda - 220,000 chips
Seat 3: European pro Larry Jonsson - 900,000 chips
Seat 4: High-stakes cash-game specialist Minh Ly - 240,000 chips
Seat 5: WSOP bracelet winner Burt Boutin - 460,000 chips
Seat 6: WSOP veteran Rob Keston - 335,000 chips
Seat 7: Last years main event 18th place finisher Sirous Jamshidi - 865,000 chips
Seat 8: British pro Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott - 1,300,000 chips
Seat 9: WSOP veteran player Erik Cajelais - 1,075,000 chips
It didn’t take long for the action to start and on the second hand of the final table Rob Keston was sent home. He held
but was defeated by Minh Ly’s
. For his three day long effort and 9th place finish, he was paid $57, 721.
Erik Cajelais soon became the chip leader, but this was short lived as Devilfish started his march to the front of the pack. First of all he eliminated Humberto Brenes when his pocket queens in the hole held up to beat Humberto’s missed double gutshot straight draw.
Devilfish then went on to win 4 out of the next 7 hands and extended his chiplead to over $2million.
The next player to be eliminated was Full Tilt Pro John Juanda in seventh place and he left the table with $107, 196. He was eliminated by Cajelais’ who kept the pressure on Devilfish in second place.
Larry Jonsson was the next to leave in 6th place when he came out the wrong end of a battle with Sirous Jamshidi but was comforted by his $134, 682 payout.
Next to go was Minh Ly when he got involved in a pot with
against the
of Erik Cajelais. The flop of
gave Cajelais the winning flush and Ly left in fifth place with $174,537.
Down to four players and with the blinds about to increase to 40k/80k, the standings looked like this:
- Seat 5: Burt Boutin — 1.86M
- Seat 7: Sirous Jamshidi — 890K
- Seat 8: Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott — 895K
- Seat 9: Erik Cajelais — 2.03M
The players battled it out for over 30 hands before we saw the next elimination and it was the shortstack of Jamshidi whose hand didn’t stand up against Erik Cajelais and he left the table in the fourth place with $230, 833.
The next knockout was that of the previous chip leader David Ulliot. Devilfish went out in third place after his straight and flush draw didn’t hit and once again Erik Cajelais claimed another head at the final table sending Ulliot home with $332,582.
After the dinner break we entered heads up play and Burt Boutin had 2,455,000 in chips and Erik Cajelais 3,215,000 chips.
The decisive hand came after a flop of
and Cajelais moved all in with Boutin calling. Both players had practically the same hand with Boutin’s A- Q- 8- 7 vs Cajelais’ A- Q- 10- 3.
The turn card
was the killer blow giving Boutin two pair and crowning him champion of Event # 7.
The final standings for Event #7 of WSOP 2007 were:
1. Burt Boutin with $825, 956
2. Erik Cajelais with $483, 755
3. Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott with $332, 582
