WSOP Event #45 - $5,000 No Limit Holdem Six Handed

Sunday, July 1, 2007 | Adrian Milewski

In this fast paced action event the six handed NLHE attracted a large field of 728 runners all competing for a total prize pool of $3,421,600.
By the time we had reached the end of day one the field had narrowed down to 77 players and all the remaining players had made the money. By the end of day two we had reduced the field down to our final table of six which lined up as follows:
- Seat 1: Greg Pohler — 655,000
- Seat 2: Alex Bolotin — 2,010,000
- Seat 3: Gioi Luong — 570,000
- Seat 4: Bill Edler — 535,000
- Seat 5: Dutch Boyd — 705,000
- Seat 6: Erik Friberg — 2,795,000
Gioi Luong became the first person to be eliminated from the event, after he had already caused a delay to the final table starting when he was missing. Just 8 hands into the final table and he pushed all in with
and was called by Alex Bolotin who was holding
. When the board came down
then Luong was eliminated and sent home in 6th place collecting $110,860.
Bill Edler who was the shortstack going into the final table had attacked this final table from the start and was slowly building his stack up. Then there was a key hand with Dutch Boyd where Edler held
and once again was aggressive with it. This time Boyd had picked up a hand holding
and he called Edler’s all in bet. When the board came down
Edler caught the ace that he needed and eliminated Dutch Boyd in 5th place collecting $169,369. This pot pushed the previous short stack of Edler over the 1million chip mark and he was now a real contender to the big stacks at the table.
With just 4 players remaining the action was fierce with both the shorter stacks of Edler and Pohler refusing to lie down and doubling through the bigger stacks of Bolotin and Friberg. Eventually one of the short stacks fell when Greg Pohler attempted a steal with
and was called by Erik Friberg holding
. When the board came down
it was all over for Pohler as he exited in 4th place collecting $232,669.
Bill Edler then took over the final table winning four pots in a row to propel him into the chip lead and then shortly after he won a further five hands to extend that lead. The next big confrontation came between the other two players when Friberg who was now the shortstack pushed all in for about 1million chips holding
and was called by Bolotin who held
leaving Friberg in bad shape. The board came down
giving Bolotin the nut flush and eliminating Erik Friberg in 3rd place good for a nice payday of $345,582.
This hand brought Bolotin’s stack back into line with Edler as heads up play began. Edler turned this around by winning a big pot just a few hands into heads up play when he made a full house to win a 2.1million pot.
With Edler now firmly in the chip lead it only took another 10 or so hands to complete the tournament and the decisive hand came when faced with a re-raise from Bolotin, Edler called the all in bet holding
and was in bad shape when Bolotin turned over the dominating
. It was meant to be for Edler though when the flop came down
giving him the 10 he needed and the remaining cards were no help to Bolotin who was eliminated in 2nd place good for $504,686. Edler collected the bracelet and the 1st place prize of $904,672.
The final standings for Event #45 of WSOP 2007 were:

- Erik Friberg $345,582
- Greg Pohler $232,669
