The seniors event drew a huge field with well over 2,000 participants. This event was open to anyone over the age of 50 and there was plenty of interest.

Notable players in the field were Tom McEvoy, Padraig Parkinson and Men “The Master” Nguyen. Once the huge field had narrowed down over the first two days of play we were left with a final table line up as follows:

  • Seat 1: Jack Deutsch 133,000
  • Seat 2: Leon Lewis 841,000
  • Seat 3: Charles Anderson 104,000
  • Seat 4: Ed Smith 520,000
  • Seat 5: Ray Abels 151,000
  • Seat 6: Ernest Bennett 1,062,000
  • Seat 7: Rod Clarida 174,000
  • Seat 8: Tony Korfman 412,000
  • Seat 9: Thomas Catanzaro 278,000

Short stack Charles Andersen made his move early on when he picked up pocket queens but was called by Tony Korfman who had picked up :ad :ks . Andersen survived the flop and turn when it came down :8c :js :5c :10c but when the :kh came on the river it was all over for Andersen who left in 9th place and collected $20,209.

Next to go was Ray Abels who found his A-Q up against the pocket 7’s of Ernest Bennett and when the board brought no improvement then Abels was out in 8th place and took home $26,546.

One of the characters at the final table Jack Deutsch whose cool nickname is “The Staten Island Snake” was our 7th place finisher when he ran his K-9 into the A-9 of Ed Smith. Deutsch collected $35,965 for his efforts.

Leon Lewis wasn’t having a good time at the final table and after a few hits to his stack he found himself all in holding :ks :jc against Ernest Bennett’s :ac :6c . When the board came down :as :6h :qs :3d :5h then Lewis was eliminated in 6th place good for $47,953.

One of the other short stacks Thomas Catanzaro left shortly after when he moved with Q-10 only to hit a brick wall against Tony Korfman’s A-K. Cantanzaro finished in 5th place and took home $65,080.

It was Ed Smith who next found himself all in against Ernest Bennett. Smith held :jc :10d and Bennett held :ac :kc and when the board came down :9s :qc :3c :ah :4c Bennett’s flush meant that Ed Smith was eliminated in 4th place collecting $95,907.

Rod Clarida was the unfortunate 3rd place finisher after watching Tony Korfman hit a miracle river to survive in the previous hand he found himself all in with Q-J against the dominating K-J of Bennett. No miracle river for Clarida and he was out in 3rd good for $142,147.

In something we haven’t seen so far at this year’s WSOP the two remaining players then skipped heads up play after they made a deal for the remaining prize money. The exact details were undisclosed but Ernest Bennett took the official 1st place positions and along with it the WSOP bracelet and Corum watch.

The final standings for Event #41 of WSOP 2007 were:

  1. Ernest Bennett $348,423
  2. Tony Korfman $217,503
  3. Rod Clarida $142,147
  4. Ed Smith $95,907
  5. Thomas Catanzaro $65,080
  6. Leon Lewis $47,953
  7. Jack Deutsch $35,965
  8. Ray Abels $26,546
  9. Charles Anderson $20,209

There’s still time to qualify for the WSOP main event by winning one of the many satellites taking place on Pokerstars.
