WSOP

After a very successful tournament in this format for Event #1 of the 2007 World Series of Poker we returned to the same Mixed Limit format for Event #40. Mixed limit gives players a rotation of both No Limit and Limit Holdem throughout the tournament.

The final table line up for this event was as follows:

  • Seat 1: Scott Bohlman – 246,000 Chips
  • Seat 2: Kevin Marcotte – 184,000 Chips
  • Seat 3: Rene Mouritsen – 172,000 Chips
  • Seat 4: Karlo Lopez – 58,000 Chips
  • Seat 5: Joe Brandenburg – 129,000 Chips
  • Seat 6: Fred Goldberg – 193,000 Chips
  • Seat 7: Christopher Niesert – 396,000 Chips
  • Seat 8: Michael Craig – 338,000 Chips
  • Seat 9: Reza Zand – 147,000 Chips

During the first round of No Limit Holdem we had our first elimination when Karlo Lopez made a move with his shortstack with A-Q. He was called by Michael Craig who was holding pocket Jacks. Lopez failed to improve and left in 9th place collecting $12,252.

The next elimination came just a few hands later when Reza Sand picked up K-J and moved all in against Kevin Marcotte who called holding A-5. The ace high held up to eliminate Sand in 8th place and $16,899.

We then had to wait quite a period before the next elimination going through a number of rotations of Limit and No Limit. Finally it was Michael Craig who became the next victim of the final table and when his A-8 came up against the A-Q of Christopher Niesert then his day was all over and he left in 7th place with a prize of $22,813.

Joe Brandenburg was the next to leave when Fred Goldberg’s pair of fours was good against the 8-7 of Brandenburg which sent him to the rail in 6th place collecting $30,418.

Next to go was Kevin Marcotte when he got involved in a three way pot with Scott Bohlman and Rene Mourtisen. Mourtisen won a huge pot when his A-K connected with a king on the flop and Marcotte was eliminated in 5th place collecting $39,289. Bohlman was also left crippled by this pot and he was soon eliminated in 4th place for a prize of $54,498.

Three players soon became two when Christopher Niesert’s pocket 9’s came up against the A-J of Fred Goldberg. When an Ace came down on the flop it was over for Niesert who finished in 3rd place and collected $82,804 for his efforts.

Heads up play was a closely fought battle and both players had opportunities to win it. However it was Fred Goldberg who eventually came out on top when both he and Rene Mouritsen made flushes but Goldberg held the higher flush to claim the bracelet and the 1st place prize of $204,935.

The final standings for Event #40 of WSOP 2007 were:

  1. Fred Goldberg - $204,935
  2. Rene Mouritsen - $125,895
  3. Christopher Niesert - $82,804
  4. Scott Bohlman - $54,498
  5. Kevin Marcotte - $39,289
  6. Joe Brandenburg - $30,418
  7. Michael Craig - $22,813
  8. Reza Zand - $16,899
  9. Karlo Lopez - $12,252

There’s still time to qualify for the WSOP main event by winning one of the many satellites taking place on Pokerstars.
