WSOP Event #38 - $1,500 No Limit Holdem
Wednesday, June 27, 2007 | Adrian Milewski
Another big field in Event #38 the $1,500 NLHE tournament. Players had to be turned away as a capacity field of 2,778 took part.
After three days of play there was just nine players remaining and they came to the final table to battle it out for a impressive 1st prize of $673,628.
The final table line up was as follows:
- Seat 1 - Robert Cheung - 1,100,000
- Seat 2 - Chris Bjorin - 875,000
- Seat 3 - Ernie Crespo - 490,000
- Seat 4 - Richard Murnick - 710,000
- Seat 5 - John Kranyak - 1,040,000
- Seat 6 - Nick Goodall - 770,000
- Seat 7 - Andrew Lee - 1,575,000
- Seat 8 - Erica Schoenberg - 1,020,000
- Seat 9 - Suey Wong - 735,000
On only the second hand of play at the final table we lost a player, when Nick Goodall holding pocket 8’s was well beaten by the full house of Erica Schoenberg. Goodall finished in 9th place and collected $40,195.
Just a few dozen hands later we had another elimination when Ernie Crespo ran into Schoenberg once again holding a full house and Crespo left in 8th place with a prize of $51,192.
Suey Wong was the next to make a move, when he moved all in holding A-Q and was called by Richard Murnik holding A-K. No queen came for Wong and he was eliminated in 7th place collecting $68,255.
The bookies favourite going into the final table was Chris Bjorin as he had already had an impressive 2007 WSOP making a number of final tables, but as of yet not claiming a bracelet. Once again the bracelet was to escape Bjorin again as he left in 6th place after coming out of the wrong side of a hand with Richard Murnik. Bjorin collected $87,215 for his effort.
After getting low on chips Andrew Lee made a move with
under the gun and was called by Richard Kranyak. Kranyak won the hand with two pair and sent Lee home in 5th place collecting a nice prize of $119,447.
It was to be Kranyak himself who would be the next to leave when he hit a real cooler holding pocket Queens and found himself up against Robert Cheung’s pocket kings. The kings held up to eliminate Kranyak in 4th place with a payday of $170,639.
In the very next hand Cheung then claimed another head when he made an all-in bet holding pocket 8’s and Erica Schoenberg made the call holding A-J. Schoenberg didn’t improve however and the 8’s held up to give Cheung another big pot and send Schoenberg out in 3rd place along with $261,646.
The rush continued for Cheung as heads up play was over before it even really started. On the very first hand Cheung made two pair and all the money found its way in the middle with Richard Murnick picking up a pair of fours and thinking he was good. Cheung collected the bracelet and the monster 1st place prize of $673,628. Murnick missed out on the bracelet but I’m sure he will be happy with the consolation prize of $417,117.
The final standings for Event #38 of WSOP 2007 were:
- Robert Cheung - $673,628
- Richard Murnick - $417,117
- Erica Schoenberg - $261,646
- John Kranyak - $170,639
- Andrew Lee - $119,447
- Chris Bjorin - $87,215
- Suey Wong - $68,255
- Ernie Crespo - $51,192
- Nick Goodall - $40,195
There’s still time to qualify for the WSOP main event by winning one of the many satellites taking place on Pokerstars.
