World Series of Poker

All eyes were on 2004 Main Event Champion Greg ‘Fossilman’ Raymer who was making his second appearance at a final table at this years World Series of Poker. Once again Raymer was showing his diverse poker skills at a poker variation other than Texas Holdem.

The final table for this Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event lined up as follows:

  • Seat 1: Steve Graboski — 373,000
  • Seat 2: Ryan Hughes — 341,000
  • Seat 3: Greg Raymer — 215,000
  • Seat 4: Adam Spiegelberg — 36,000
  • Seat 5: Doug Carli — 97,000
  • Seat 6: Jim Weir — 46,000
  • Seat 7: Min Lee — 66,000
  • Seat 8: Ron Ware — 167,000

These were the final eight players out of a starting field of 340 players, one of the smaller fields of this years WSOP as to be expected from a less popular poker variation.

With a number of short stacks at the table the action was bound to be high early on and we lost Adam Spiegelberg early on in 8th place with $13,923.

Next to be eliminated was Ron Ware who came out the worst in a hand with Greg Raymer and left in 7th place with $18,873.

Raymer was also the villain in the next elimination when he made two pair to eliminate Jim Weir in 6th place with a prize of $24,443. Raymer was now the chip leader at the table.

Raymer’s fortune then went up and down with a couple of big hits to his stack in losing pots to Doug Carli, Min Lee, and Ryan Hughes but he did pick up another elimination when he hit trip 7’s against the busted flush draw of Steve Graboski who left in 5th place with $32,178 in his pocket.

Raymer then came out the worst in an encounter with Ryan Hughes who was holding the winning hand with two pair and it was Raymer who was to leave in 4th place with $41,460 and the disappointment of not winning the bracelet he so wants this year.

Hughes continued his run next knocking out Doug Carli when Hughes made a monster full house to beat Carli’s two pair which sent Carli home in 3rd place and with $61,880.

Min Lee had survived throughout the final table after starting as one of the short stacks so he was not intimidated by the big chip lead that Ryan Hughes had over him going into heads up play. Hughes held around a million chips while Lee held just 360k.

Heads up play only lasted a few hands though as Hughes dominated winning seven out of the first twelve hands and the decisive hand came when Lee made trip 4’s only to find Hughes holding quad 10’s which left Hughes with the coveted bracelet and the $176,358 1st place payout.

The final standings for Event #20 of WSOP 2007 were:

  1. Ryan Hughes — $176,358
  2. Min Lee — $97,461
  3. Doug Carli — $61,880
  4. Greg Raymer — $41,460
  5. Steve Graboski — $32,178
  6. Jim Weir — $24,443
  7. Ron Ware — $18,873
  8. Adam Spiegelberg — $13,923

There’s still time to qualify for the WSOP main event by winning one of the many satellites taking place on Pokerstars.
