WSOP Event #13 - Can Cunningham do it again?

Monday, June 11, 2007 | Adrian Milewski

There were 398 players that entered the $5,000 Pot Limit Holdem event and only 51 of them returned for day 2 on Saturday.
Some big names remained in the field all trying to reach the end of the day and the final table. Some of those remaining were Allen Cunningham, Humberto Brenes, Scott Fischman, Kathy Liebert, Cliff ‘JohnnyBax’ Josephy, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson, Jeff Lisandro, and Gavin Griffin.
Allen Cunningham, who has enjoyed tremendous success at the WSOP over the last few years and very nearly won the Main Event last year just missing out to Jamie Gold, was chasing his fifth WSOP bracelet.
John Dwyer turned out to be a real hero early on after winning a big three way pot against Kirill Gerasimov and Rob Hollink. Kathy Liebert was also sent packing early on when her pocket 10’s were badly outdrawn by Matt Gianetti’s A-9 who flopped a nine and then made trips on the turn.
Jason Lester was the winner of this same event last year and he fought hard throughout the day to defend his title. Starting the day on a shortstack he battled away and cemented his claim at this years title by winning a significant pot from Greg Mueller, a name you may remember from Event #1’s final table. This would eventually lead to Lester making the final table and the chance to retain his title.
The unlucky bubble man was Mickey Appleman and his elimination assured each of the 36 remaining players a minimum five- figure payday. After this the names continued to drop, with Kirill Gerasinmov, Event #1 winner Steve Billirakis, Chris Ferguson and Joe Sebok all amongst those eliminated in the race to the final table.
After the dinner break the remaining field made quick work of getting down to the 9 player final table line-up.
The final table bubble was finally broken when Chris Sandrock was knocked out in 10th place and we were left with a mouth watering final table line-up, with defending champion Jason Lester, record chasing Allen Cunningham, and seasoned pro’s Humberto Brenes and Jeff Lisandro all still in the hunt.
