UK Casino Scam Group Sentenced
Monday, November 26, 2007 | Adrian Milewski
A London-based group of three people – two men and one woman have been sentenced by a London Court for their involvement in scams at several UK casinos.
The group carried out a high-tech scam operation that was conducted with the help of micro-cameras, computer monitors and hearing devices all controlled from a nearby white van.
The verdict given by Southwark Crown Court comprised of a nine-month imprisonment to Yau Yiu and suspended sentences and community service orders to Fan Leung Tang and Bit Chai Wong. In addition to these, all of them were banned from visiting casinos in future.
The three accused pleaded guilty for their act and the underlying master-plan of cheating a casino with the help of an extremely sophisticated system. The system consisted of some micro-cameras, earpieces and transmitter. The simulation of the way the fraud was carried out demonstrated the expertise and mental agility of the gang.
The way the scam operated was that two of the gang would start playing at one of the croupier dealt games in the casino which meant that they were playing against the house and not other players. Meanwhile, one of the players would transmit pictures of the cards being dealt back to the nearby white van from the sensitive micro-camera which was hidden on the inner side of his arm.
The pictures were then transmitted with the aid of a small transmitter to the computer monitor placed in the white van just close to the casino. The third member would then carefully analyze the pictures of the dealt cards in slow motion and then communicate an adjusted strategy based on the analyzed information back to the members at the table through the hidden earpieces.
This gang used this methodology with precision and expertise to win over £250,000 from around six casinos in London. The members had carried out this operation so many times that the casinos did not suspect anything and were unaware of any deceit. However, the gang got greedy and eventually ran out of luck, when on one occasion a casino security staff noticed the same white van that he had seen before.
The result was the casino asking for the involvement of police and the Metropolitan Police Gaming Unit arranged for sufficient resources and plans in order to catch the group ‘red-handed’.
On the night when the group was arrested, the trio had already earned £3,500 in about 30 minutes. The casino was buzzing around the success rate of Bit Chai Wong who had turned £31,000 into £69,000 in the last week. However, the police units were alert and ready to nab the cheaters. Detective Inspector Darren Warner executed the entire operation with precise planning and efficiency.
It is believed that this kind of calculated cheating system was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom which robbed several casinos on all fronts of ethics and business values. The scam has seen the review and upgrade of advanced security systems in all casinos across Britain to prevent any such incidents happening in the future.
