Svenska Spel, Sweden’s state backed gaming company, which offers a sportsbook, lottery site, poker room, gaming site and bingo room, could be heading to court after the company failed to accept the findings of the European Commission’s (EC), that, by blocking gambling firms from neighbouring EU countries, it has contravened EU law on the freedom of movement for goods and services

With the argument that laws are fair and aid the prevention of crime as well as providing social protection to Swedish gamblers, the Sweden’s government justified the gambling monopoly.

The case may be moved to the European Court of Justice if the EC fails to accept the Swedish government’s arguments, which may prolong the outcome of the case by a number of years.

Chief Executive of online gambling group Unibet, Peter Nylander, expressed his dismay saying: ‘It looks like the market will be opened up by the European Commission rather than the government and it doesn’t make any political logic.’
