Jerry Yang wins 2007 WSOP Main Event

Wednesday, July 18, 2007 | Adrian Milewski

The World Series of Poker Main Event is the biggest and most prestigious poker tournament in the world and what a spectacle this year’s final table was.
With the final table going out live over pay per view on ESPN and in front of a large audience in the Amazon room at the Rio the millions watching were treated to a real exciting show over the 16 hours of play.
The line up at the final table was as follows:
- Seat 1: Jon Kalmar – 20,320,000
- Seat 2: Lee Childs – 13,240,000
- Seat 3: Philip Hilm – 22,070,000
- Seat 4: Jerry Yang – 8,450,000
- Seat 5: Raymond Rahme – 16,320,000
- Seat 6: Tuan Lam – 21,315,000
- Seat 7: Alex Kravchenko – 6,570,000
- Seat 8: Lee Watkinson – 9,925,000
- Seat 9: Hevad Khan – 9,205,000
The first few hours of play went completely differently to everyone’s expectations. Jerry Yang was regarding by most watching the last few days play leading up to the final table to be a very tight and weak player.
So when he raised the very first pot up to $1.5m and got called by the big blind only to follow up with another huge bet after the flop to take the hand down everyone assumed he must have had a big hand to do this.
He then went on over the next 20 hands to win about half the pots and was raising and re-raising before the flop and being very aggressive. The rest of the table were absolutely astounded by this and didn’t really know what to do while Yang increased his chip stack from 8.4m at the start of play to 20m+.
A lot of these hands were not shown down, and so until the full broadcast from ESPN with the pocket cams we will never know if in this initial two hour period Yang was just on the ultimate card rush or whether it was just his strategy going into the final table.
Our first shock of the day was given to us by Yang and the chip leader going into the final table Philip Hilm. It was Hilm who decided that somebody needed to stand up to Yang and after being chased out of a few previous pots with Yang the following pot came up when Yang raised from late position to 1million and after some thought from Hilm in the big blind he called.
The flop came down
and Hilm checks. Yang bets 2millions and Hilm calls after about 30 seconds. The turn card is
and again Hilm checks with Lang coming out with a bet of 4million into what was growing to be a huge pot. Hilm responded by moving all in and there was a long delay while Yang considered the call and the tournament director counted down the massive chip stack of Philip Hilm. Yang had him covered and when Yang called holding
for top pair top kicker Hilms tournament life was on the line showing
for a pair of fives and a flush draw. The turn came a blank with the
and amazingly the chip leader going into the final table was the first to leave finishing in 9th place collecting $525,934.
This left the whole table in shock, Jerry Yang had increased his stack from 8million to over 40 million and eliminated the chip leader in the process all in the space of just 15 hands!
It didn’t stop there when one of the favourites before the start of play Full Tilt Pro Lee Watkinson was the next victim of Yang. After a raise from Yang in the small blind Watkinson made a stand and moved all in for 9.7million. Yang considered for some time before making an astonishing call and widely criticised by Phil Gordon who was commentating for ESPN and other pro’s in the audience. Yang turned over
and was in great shape against the
of Lee Watkinson. The board came down
and Watkinson was eliminated in 8th place collecting $585,699. This sent Jerry Lang to 55million in chips almost half the chips in play and left the entire table petrified of Yang after showing he would call down a raise of 10million with such a weak hand.
Watkinson probably had more at stake than anyone at the table as he qualified for the WSOP via Full Tilt Poker who always promise to top up the prize to any of their qualifiers who win the Main Event. This year Full Tilt had pledged to award a further $10million, and so Lee Watkinson was really playing for a 1st prize of $18.25million!
Yang continued his crusade and next on his list was Lee Childs who had earlier been involved in a very tense pot with Yang and Childs had actually folded pocket queens to an all in raise from Yang. This time Yang was caught trying to steal the pot when Lee Childs raised from the small blind and Yang moved all in. Childs made a great call holding just
and Yang turned over
. When the
came on the turn Childs was crushed and had a hell of a bad beat story to live with for the rest of his life. Childs left in 7th place and collected $705,229.
Considering the action in the first 30 hands of play things slowed down a bit over the next period and even though Yang continued to be aggressive, the other players at the table were still trying to work out how to deal with him. The next elimination didn’t come until hand 56 and who else but Yang was the man wielding the axe. Yang raised to 1.5million from mid position and Hevad ‘Rain’ Khan re-raised from the small blind to 6 million. Yang took a long time to think it over and eventually called, but once again showing his inexperience as he went to turn his cards over thinking Kahn was all in only to be stopped just in time by the dealer and tournament director.
Kahn then announced that he was moving all in after the flop in the dark and the flop came down
. At this point it was only another 3.5m for Yang to call and he did so and showed
and Khan turned over
. The turn came
and the river
to give Yang his 4th head at the final table and eliminate Khan in 6th place collecting $956,243.
Down to just five players and the $8.25million first prize was brought out and laid out infront of the remaining players. At this stage now all of the five remaining players are guaranteed million dollar payouts.
The next person to be eliminated was around hand #60 and it was the only English man left at the table Jon Kalmer. Amazingly Yang didn’t get involved in this one and it was the
of Kalmer versus the
of South African Raymond Rahme. The board came down
and Kalmer was eliminated in 5th place collecting $1,255,069.
This was to be the last of the eliminations for a while as play really slowed down. In fact we did not have another elimination for about 8 hours and until hand #167. Alex Kravchenko who had started the final table as the short stack and masterfully worked his way up the money ladder finally caved in and when he raised from the small blind only to see Yang move all in he very quickly called for the remaining 19million of his stack. Kravchenko showed
and Yang was holding
and when the
came on the flop to give Yang trips then Kravchenko was eliminated in 4th place with a consolation of $1,852,721 which was a great achievement for the shortstack going into the final table considering that 9th place only paid $525,934.
Three handed play didn’t last long as one of the crowd favourites and the oldest player at the table Raymond Rahme was eliminated. Jerry Yang raised to 2.5m and Rahme re-raises to 8.6m which Yang calls. The flop comes down
Rahme checks and Yang bets 10m and Rahme responds by moving all in for a further 17m. Yang finally makes the call and turns over
for top pair and Rahme turns over
to the horrible revelation that he needed some serious help. That didn’t arrive on the turn of
and river of
and Rahme finished in 3rd place for a big payday of $3,048,025.
Down to heads up play and the chip counts looked as follows:
- Jerry Yang - 104.45 million
- Tuan Lam - 23.025 million
Heads up play started off cagey and it lasted for 35 hands before we got a conclusion. In the decisive hand Jerry Yang on the button raised to 2.3m and Tuan Lam moved all in for a total of 22.2m. It only took about 10 seconds for Yang to make the call and he turns over
and we were set for a classic race when Lam turned over
. The flop came down
pushing Lam into the lead with his pair of queens. The turn card came down
which gave Yang an inside straight draw and sure enough on the river the
came down to fill Yangs straight and make him the 2007 World Champion. Yang and the crowd erupted and lights started flashing everywhere while Yang was mobbed by friends and family.
Lam who had been unusually quiet at the final table collected $4,840,981 for his 2nd place finish while the new world champion Jerry Yang collected the Main Event bracelet and a 1st prize of $8.25m together with his place in WSOP history.
This really is an amazing story when you consider that Jerry Yang only started playing poker two years ago, and actually won his seat to the WSOP Main Event in a $200 satellite at his local casino.
