Is Malta is the next online casino superpower?
Friday, August 31, 2007 | Adrian Milewski
With a new ban being put into practice in the UK against advertisements for online casinos that do not come from the “white listed” countries, the next contender for supremacy of the online casino industry seems to be Malta. There are 27 corporations who have announced that they are moving their operations to the Mediterranean country.
Instead of following the same path as the US, which forces Americans to gamble at sites which knowingly bend the UIGEA, the British government has decided to go for the regulation route. To do this, they have created a “white list”, which comprises the countries from which online casinos would be allowed to advertise in the UK.
The growth of Malta as a destination for online gaming corporations has happened over the past few years but has spiked as a direct result of the UK white list. The UK hopes the proposed “white list” results in creating a safer world for online gamblers, by making sure that these companies activities are properly regulated and monitored in the countries that they operate.
