Default Raising question

I'm having trouble figuring out the exact definition of a raise.

Example 1:

I'm playing at a table and the blinds are $1/$2. Let's say I'm in the big blind position, I already have $2 in the pot. I raise to $10, increasing my original bet by $8. Is a raise considered the total bet, or is it the increase. (Is it $8 or $10.)

Example 2:

I'm at the same $1/$2 table as before and I'm in the big blind position again. I want to raise 3 times the big blind. 3 times the big blind is $6, but does this mean I increase my bet $6 (making my total bet $8) or do I raise to a TOTAL of $6?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi.

In Example 1, the raise is $8 i.e. the increase from the big blind. In Example 2 to raise 3x bb would be a raise of $4 to a total bet of $6. If you raiseit to $8 to go, that would be 4x bb.

Hope this helps.
