Default Fish

So Fish isn't just a kids game? It's a strategy? Not a very good one it looks like. Or maybe it's not the strategy, it's the player. And still not a very good one.

A fish is an inexperienced player. They call them that I think because they are easily baited into a hand and caught. At least that's what I always thought...lol

Going fishing can be thought of 2 ways. The most common is that you have a drawing hand and you are fishing for the card to complete your draw. But baiting an inexperienced player into a hand with you could also be considered fishing ...lol

Aha! I'm a fish! And it probably wouldn't be too hard to fish me in because of my inexperience. But that's why I'm here, to learn.

There is a saying in the poker world that when you sit at a cash table and after 5 minutes you can't tell who the Fish is then you are it.

A Fish is someone who will put money in every pot, call after every flop and probably call to the river with nothing in their hands. It is someone who really doesn't know what they are doing.

They can also be called ATMs... Automated Teller Machines... like at the bank. You push their buttons the right way they will keep throwing money at you.

Wow! I have never heard of those terms before but they do make a lot of sense. A player who has no clue what is going on might as well just hand over their wallet. I am still learning but even I know better than to do that.

I've also heard them referred to as donks, but I think that's a liitle different myself. I've run into ATM's before and I love em dearly. Get on a table with one and you can make a nice chunk of change. I think if I got it straight though, donks may be more experienced but the haven't learned anything. from the time they've spent playing. So they make dumb plays, but because they have been playing longer they also stubbornly refuse to believe their own foolishness. Or am I off the mark here?

This is fascinating. I suppose I would be the fish/donk/ATM. But maybe not. I'd probably be too afraid to really play. LOL!

Does anyone watch The Nine? Was Egan the fish in the poker game with Nick, who has a poker addiction? Or was he a good player just unevenly matched?

A Donk is someone who goes all in pre-flop almost everytime. They are also referred to as Bingo Players. What I usually do if I'm at a table with them is say..... "Gee I thought this was a poker game, not BINGO." That usually gets a laugh from the table and they tone it down a bit.

However, the Donks like to do this to steal blinds. And it will work for a while, right up until the last time. They figure this is the best way to double up but usually they run into a real hand and lose it all. Most donks don't even make it halfway through a tournament.

The only sad part about it is good players hate playing with donks and if they get a half decent hand they will call the donk and a lot of the time the donk will suck out on the river and put the good player out of the game.

So watch when you get to a table to be prepared to meet Fish, Donks, Bingo Players, ATMs and the serious player. It's the serious player that you want to compete with unless you flop a fullhouse or quads or whatever. You don't want to compete with a donk with garbage cards cause then you become a donk as well. Most good players have found the way to beat the donks and just bide their time.

PokerPrincess, you really know what you're doing. I wish I could truly follow the instruction you've so carefully typed out for me. Unfortunately, I'm still lost. Is there something lower than a fish?
