Poker is a big ocean, filled with both sharks and fish. Inevitably the fish are eaten by the sharks.

This equates to the fish being poor players, and the sharks being very good players.

You should not mistake donks as being poor players. There are plenty of times when going all in is a very valid play, and is dependent on the stage of the tournament and the buy ins. If i play in a low buy in game, i will have no problem with going all in early on in tournaments when i have a very good hand. More often than not, you will get a caller, as they are fish, and do not understand that risking your chips early on with any 2 cards leads to defeat more often than not, however this strategy is best used for the opening hands only, and not later on in the tournament.

Again, in rebuy tournaments, people will go allin on pots with far less outs than they would in a freeze out game, as they will and can rebuy if they do not pull out the suck out. This strategy is used for open ended draws/1 card to flush.

Very good players will change their styles, and it is hard to categorise them, which makes them the sharks.

A Fish is someone who will put money in every pot, call after every flop and probably call to the river with nothing in their hands. It is someone who really doesn't know what they are doing.

They can also be called ATMs... Automated Teller Machines... like at the bank. You push their buttons the right way they will keep throwing money at you.

hi i play poker at bsq and there is one player that always calls me a fish as dose most people now i dont go in every hand poss i go in on medioker hans and raise pre flop if i have qq kk aa j 10 on and on could you some how tell me if that is a fish plz

If you are playing solid poker, don't try to refute them thinking that you are a fish. It will only help you. Go along with it..say things that may convince them to continue that line of thinking...and then when you have all of their chips, try to convince them you are a "donk." (as everybody uses that term when they lose, no matter who they lose to it seems)

Two things:
Is it true that FISH is an acronym for "F***ing Idiot, S*** Hand"?

And secondly, what differentiates a very aggressive player and a fish? If you go in with only the good hands that you are dealt and fold the bad ones, people will surely know that you've got a good hand.

Someone over at PokerTH (open-source poker game - so the quality of the players will be poorer) has played ten games with the "auto-call-any" function on (i.e. never folding) and won 60% of the games. This is definitely an extreme case of being a fish, but it seems to be a good tactic, no?
